Bulgaria on the map of Europe

Bulgaria is a small country in Eastern Europe. More specifically, it’s located on the Balkan Peninsula. In fact, the peninsula has its name from the Balkan mountains which stretch throughout the country.

It borders Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south and the Black Sea to the east.

National Theatre, Sofia
National Theatre, Sofia

The capital of Bulgaria is Sofia, and it’s also the largest city. With over 2,000 years of history, Sofia is a nice blend between old and new. As all capital cities, it’s busy and noisy, but the nearby Vitosha mountain offers an instant relief to those who want to escape from the bustling city.

Is Bulgaria in the EU?

Yes, the country joined the European Union in 2007 and has no plan of leaving anytime soon. In 2020, it has officially applied for membership of the Eurozone. It may take a while before it adopts the euro, but it’s a clear sign of which direction it’s heading (‘in’ rather than ‘out’).

What is the Bulgarian currency?

As of 2020, the Bulgarian currency is Bulgarian lev, or leva (BGN).

1 BGN = 0.51 EUR, 0.58 USD and 0.46 GBP (exchange rate as of June, 2020). Check the current exchange rate here.

What’s the weather in Bulgaria?

Weather in Bulgaria

Bulgarian weather is diverse with pleasant spring temperatures, hot summer sun shining from the sandy beaches to the green mountains, colorful fall landscapes, and snowy winters. You can get the best out of all four seasons here and will never get tired because there’s always another season around the corner.

Is Bulgaria safe?

Yes, it is as safe as any other European country. Of course, you shouldn’t leave your valuables unattended, but if you use common sense, you should be fine. I personally have felt safer walking alone around Sofia in the middle of the night than in many other countries, even in broad daylight.
